Exploring the 2021 Transfer Portal

With a weaker recruiting class, it is incredibly important to hit big in the transfer portal. Players like Kyle Macy, Johnny Juzang, and Kyle Wiltjer have all come out of the transfer portal and done huge things for their next teams. Let’s take a look at some transfers Kentucky has already landed ahead of the 2021-2022 season.

Kellan Grady

Kellan just recently decided to take his amazing shot creating skills to Kentucky after a very impressive senior season at Davidson. He averaged just over 17 points, nearly 4 rebounds, and over 2 assists a game while shooting about 47% from the field. His sharpshooting and shot-creating draw comparisons to Kentucky legend Devin Booker. After a dreadful last season, getting a Booker-like player would be very refreshing.

Oscar Tshiebwe

Tshiebwe left West Virginia about midway through last season after averaging around 8 points and 8 rebounds. I expect Oscar to start for us next season and bring some strength to the paint. Oscar is a much needed addition to the team and I hope he can bring a lot to the table.

Even after having a few players returning, 3 recruits, and these transfers, the roster still has some gaps. Cal has been in touch with many other players in the transfer portal that he hopes can make an impact on this team. Let’s go over some of these targets.

Marcus Carr

The Minnestota transfer had nothing short of an outstanding year this past season. He has declared for the draft for a second time, without hiring an agent once again. It is a popular belief that if Carr does return to college, he will be rocking blue and white for the Cats. In my opinion, landing Carr makes Kentucky a guaranteed top 5 seed in the national tournament. His exceptional playmaking and unreal shot-creating make him the perfect fit for any team. He put up great numbers averaging about 19 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds a game this past year. Carr should 100% be the number one target on Cal’s list this offseason.

Rocket Watts

Watts is yet another point guard on the list of target transfers for the Wildcats this offseason. Rocket played 2 seasons under Coach Izzo at Michigan State before entering the transfer portal just recently. Watts averaged just under 8 points on a concerning 33% shooting percentage. Though he may not have shined with the Spartans, Rocket definitely has the potential to be something big. As we all know, if anybody’s going to bring out the great potential of his players, it’s Calipari.

Adam Miller

Lastly, Miller is another transfer target of Calipari’s. To no surprise, Adam is also a point guard. Miller averaged about 8 points per game last season for the 1-seeded Fighting Illini. It is believed that if we do really want Miller, we will get him. Adam is close friends with incoming Kentucky commit Bryce Hopkins and it wouldn’t be too tough to get the duo together.

With over 900 players in the transfer portal this offseason, there are many options for Cal to find the right fit for the new-look Wildcats. Will Kentucky strike big in the portal or will we have to work with what we’ve got? Only time will tell.
